If you're after a walk that rewards you with big views without an all-day commitment, put Drawing Room Rocks near Berry on your list. We headed out there recently and came back reminded why it's one of our favourite short escapes on the doorstep of the Illawarra.

The Trail

The track up is a single, well-defined path, so there's no second-guessing which way to go - just lace up and follow it. It winds through cool, shaded forest before opening out as you climb, and the change in scenery alone is worth the effort. As the trees thin out, the rock underfoot becomes more exposed, and you start to get a sense of the drama waiting at the top.

The Rock Formations

The rock formations along the way are the real showstopper. Weathered sandstone has been carved by wind and time into shapes you don't expect to stumble across on a regional bushwalk - the kind of terrain that has you stopping every few minutes just to look around. It's easy to see how the area earned its name, with rock "rooms" and ledges that beg to be explored (carefully - some edges are unfenced, so watch your footing).

The Views (and Where to Picnic)

What sets this walk apart is just how many good spots there are to stop. Rather than one single lookout at the very top, you'll find multiple picnic-worthy perches along the way, each with sweeping views out across the Illawarra escarpment toward Kangaroo Valley and the coast. We'd recommend packing a lunch and taking your time - there's no need to rush to the top when the views along the way are this good.

A Lyrebird Encounter

The highlight of our walk, though, wasn't a view at all. Partway up, we heard - then spotted - a lyrebird going through its full repertoire, mimicking everything from other birdcalls to the sounds of the bush around it. It's one of those moments that reminds you why this part of the world is so special. If you're walking quietly and take your time, keep an ear out - the Illawarra escarpment forest is prime lyrebird territory, especially in the cooler months.

Good to Know Before You Go

• Location: Near Berry, on the edge of the Illawarra escarpment.
• Trail: A single, easy-to-follow track with some steeper, rockier sections as you near the top.
• Bring: Sturdy shoes, water, a jacket (it gets breezy up top), and something for a picnic - you'll want to stop more than once.
• Wildlife: Keep your eyes and ears open for lyrebirds, plus the usual bush birdlife.
• Gear tip: A day pack, a lightweight rain jacket and a comfortable pair of trail shoes are all you need to enjoy this one properly - all available to hire from us here in Wollongong if you're travelling light or don't want to invest before you know you love hiking.
